After the scorching summer, gardeners all over the region are assessing the damage and making plans to spruce up, plan and prepare for the fall planting season. If you need some ideas for beautiful fall color, contact one of our landscaping and gardening advertisers for a consultation. I have learned from experience that it is better in the long run to pay a professional to advise in these matters! And, they will always tell you they prefer to plant trees and shrubs in the fall to give the roots a chance to settle and be ready for spring growth. Our feature story will give you some great ideas!
If you are interested in viewing fall colors beyond your back yard, you will love our BackRoads trip to the U.S. National Arboretum in Washington, D.C. This tree museum offers hours of entertainment and breathtaking beauty. If you’ve never been, you are in for a treat! Make it a two-fer and visit Brookside Gardens to see the “Wings of Fancy” exhibit, an amazing collection of butterflies that are prolific in September. Count how many different types of butterflies you see and let us know!
The fundraising season is upon us, and while we can’t possibly sponsor every worthy event, we have agreed to sponsor several of the region’s big events. We list as many as we can in our Event listings. Not only are these great causes, but the event committees also work extremely hard to make them a lot of fun, with terrific food, entertainment and silent auction opportunities. We hope that you’ll find a cause you’d like to support and attend at least one this fall!
Fall is also Back to School time. You can hear a collective sigh from parents who now have to juggle their schedules to accommodate the frenzy of school and after-school activities. For those who are considering one of the many fine independent school options for their children, we offer our first Guide to Independent Schools. Profiles and open house dates and times put all the important information at your fingertips! And, next month, we continue our coverage with an open house directory and a story on the State of the Arts in the independent schools.
Enjoy the fall!
